DigiDecom 2022

DigiDecom 2022

DigiDecom is an initiative coordinated by the Institute for Energy Technology, in collaboration with various partner organisations, consisting of regular workshops and training events. The overall aim of the DigiDecom series is facilitating the adoption of digital and robotics technology based innovative solutions for enhancing safety, efficiency and transparency of decommissioning projects in the nuclear and other sectors.

The DigiDecom workshop series has been initiated in 2017 and has continued with annual events since its initiation, gathering 80 to more than 100 international experts every year representing a very wide range of the stakeholder community. DigiDecom workshops primary aim is to engage all participants in highly interactive discussion and debates focusing on past and foreseen challenges for decommissioning and opportunities for application of innovative, digitalisation and robotics solutions for improving current practices form a holistic (systemic) perspective considering both technical as well as human, societal, organisational and other aspects.

Main partner organisations for the DigiDecom workshop events are:

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA)
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
VTT, Finland
Smart Innovation Norway
Actimondo, Germany
Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND)

DigiDecom-Training was also initiated in 2017 with two IAEA training courses held in 2017 and 2018. The initiative continues with various types of training events planned for 2020 and later year.

The DigiDecom-Training series aims at providing a comprehensive training curriculum, streamlined for different professions, in a more engaging and effective training experience with longer retention rates through complementing international coordinated efforts into training for decommissioning with digitally enhanced interactive modules.

The DigiDecom-Training series focuses on teaching about how to take advantage of exciting key technologies like virtual & mixed reality, robotics, AI and other modern technologies for safe and efficient disposal of our nuclear heritage. Participants of trainings learn about current practices and lessons learned, new methods based for application of digitalization, robotics, machine learning and AI. DigiDecom-Training uses VR immersive, serious gaming & simulation-based storytelling, augmented reality and digital twin technologies for enhancing trainee engagement and knowledge retention. Hands on group exercises and friendly competitions designed based on examples from real-life projects have a very strong weight in the DigiDecom trainings events.

Main current partner organisations for the DigiDecom-Training events are:

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
iUS Institut für Umwelttechnologien und Strahlenschutz GmbH (iUS), Germany
Actimondo, Germany

Other partners include: Argonne National Laboratory – US, Florida International University (FIU) – US, Sogin – Italy, Apollo plus – Switzerland, VISAVI and Catenda – Norway, Createc – UK, ÅF – Sweden, NND – Norway.
